I mean, really failed. At least a connecting rod broke.
Good stick. The nice thing about flying around here is that if you have any altitude, you
are often within gliding distance of a pretty nice airport.
With all due respect to Juan ... when you're landing without power, don't try to touch down
on the numbers. Aim one third of the way down the very long runway.
Don't get me wrong. I love short field approaches. But after the engine crankcase is
ventilated, the objective changes. You can easily land short of the runway with no power,
especially if you misjudge the winds.
Don't try to impress people with a power-off landing on the numbers. That can go
horribly wrong if you slightly misjudge your glide. You're going to look like a donkey
if you land 800 feet short of an 8,000 foot runway. Like that guy in the T-33 at Hamilton,
and he didn't have a mechanical. I see these photos were scrubbed from the internet:
Oddly, TC still lets him reside, own property and fly in Canada.
