Quick question for the experts here…can you apply previous dual time to your CPL or does it have to be dual time specifically tied to commercial exercises? According to my interpretation of the regs, I have all the required total time, PIC time, along with a night rating and VFR OTT to boot. My FTU is suggesting I need to do all the 35 hours dual for a CPL from scratch for the PTR to prove that my previous dual time was conducted in accordance with commercial standards. Admittedly some of my dual is a bit of grab bag but still.... What say the forum???

No expert here but IIRC I had to do all CPL dual regardless of previous hours
I think there was some credit given towards the instrument portion for dual received
for the Night Rating

It's whatever an instructor is willing to sign off in the PTR. Seemings how I did some of that dual, fire the thing my way and I'll sign it off.

I was an Authorized Person for 20 years ...
CPL dual must be received after issuance
(not written or flight test, issuance) of the
PPL. That's why a night rating, for example,
which you do after your PPL, counts towards
your CPL.
Any other dual flight instruction that you
receive after your PPL ought to count towards
your CPL dual unless the instructor that gave
the dual is a total idiot and isn't teaching
you anything.
For example, when I gave tailwheel dual to
PPL's, of course it counted as CPL dual, and
I would sign it off in their PTR. Or, start one.
Same thing for aerobatic dual. Or formation.
Or type training. You name it.
I really don't see how this doesn't comply
with CAR 421.30(4)(a)(ii) which states:
(ii) following the issuance of a private pilot licence — aeroplane by Canada or another contracting state, have completed 65 hours of commercial pilot flight training in aeroplanes consisting of a minimum of:
(A) 35 hours dual instruction flight time, under the direction and supervision of the holder of a Flight Instructor Rating — Aeroplane, including:

OK. So I'm contemplating getting my CPL. not for any particular reason, but just to have it.
I went through my logbook and seem to have most of the experience requirements:
681 TT
570 PIC
Since PPL -
-60.2hrs dual with Instructor (plus 12 with a CPL for my multi)
-5 hr Night requirement met as I have a Night Rating
-5.6hrs dual x-country met during my 10 hr PA28 checkout (insurance)
- 20 hr instrument time requirement met by having instrument rating
-30 hrs solo - I have many hours solo post PPL, but none that i could say is "training". a lot of practicing tho....
-300 mile x-country with 3 landings.... met many times over
- 5hrs night including 10 takeoffs and landings - requirement met by having night rating
So the question is the 25 hrs solo "training" does practicing count???
also--- the dual time - my 60 hrs is spread across about 5 or 6 different instructors.... would I have to track them all down to sign my commercial PTR??

PS I wanted to mention history of 80 hours CPL ground school.
A few years back, this suddenly appeared without any
explanation in the CARs. The "4" in "40 hours" was changed
to an "8" in "80 hours".
What really confused the fuck out of all of us in industry
is that there was no change whatsoever to the material
required to be covered.
What the fuck? Did TC think that everyone's IQ was
suddenly halved overnight?
Various people pestered TC, and the terse reply was
that we were "aligning with ICAO". Had to have 80
hours CPL ground school.
Now you know that story.
For more information, take Chuck out for a beer and
ask him about Jim Dow.
