A massive checklist in a Cub is just silly
I would opine that a massive checklist is
always silly.  It's not a maintenance
manual.

I remember a Boeing driver saying that
Boeing printed a checklist with 3 items
on the control column, of stuff that you
really needed to do.  Forget what model
of crowd killer that was.

But maybe Boeing has a clue.  If it can't
kill you, it shouldn't be on a checklist.

Our entire normal ops checklist from setup to shutdown for a citation fits on a 4x8 laminated piece of paper.  I use it, but never hesitated to not use it in areas of high traffic or nordo traffic who just do what they want (Bahamas), in order to keep a strong lookout.

One habit I have is over the fence check gear down....it came from Chucks old saying "where am I landing, where is my gear" that I have done for every single landing in an amphib and carried it to anything else with retractable gear.  It has never failed me and there isn't much more on a checklist that is more critical than gear down.

There are only a couple of killer items.

Controls free & normal.

Fuel selected on and sufficient.

Gear in proper position for landing.

The mighty 737-200 only asks that you verify a handful of items before partaking in most normal flight phases.
They're putting big money on you knowing to pull the stick back to make the trees smaller at Vr and to reverse that movement when landing. Did you forget to put your seatbelt on? Did you forget to zip up your fly and put the seat down? Did you wash your hands?

Bigger checklists would help!

If forgetting an item does not result
in a compulsory call to the TSB, it
should not be on a checklist.

I would add, especially in aircraft with no cockpit bulkhead right behind the pilot seats:

Seat locked in position for takeoff. Pretty hard to aviate when you have slid backwards on rotation and can't reach the controls anymore.
Chuck Ellsworth

True, one must check killer items specific to aircraft type.

But you don't need a written check list to do it.  :)

People try to make stuff so complicated ....

Before takeoff in the L39:

- canopy locked
- speed brakes in
- flaps 15

and that's it.  No run-up required.  So much
simpler than what I see the people in the white
shirts do at Peterborough:

You have to remember to shove the lever on the left
all the way forward, and release the brakes, though.

You had me right up til "white shirts" ....pushing the thing on the left AND releasing brakes???  Now that is just showing off :).
