I think since I have been flying, the Rockies claim a small plane every year. While a Cherokee six (or any of it variants) can pack six people, it certainly doesn’t leave it with any up performance to spare. Especially if it’s one of the retractables.

Going to some sort of church meeting according to the RCMP in the one video. What kind of church meeting could be so important to flash off into the Rockies at night in terrible weather?

Were they VFR?

I can't find a reliable source claiming VFR or IFR.

I would assume VFR based on the timeline. If you were talking to Center, I'd think you would be reported overdue a little sooner.

You’re right, I assumed they were VFR. Canadian GA has an aversion to IFR flying. That being said if they where IFR I think they would be still talking to Edmonton Centre through that area at the MEA.

Never flown a Cherokee 6 but lots of the boys up in Alaska operate them and they seemed to be a good hauler. However 6 men and bags even overnight bags I think would be a good load.

The Other Site mentioned a TSB message that listed the flight as VFR.

That's nasty

8 months of Alaska flying in the mighty 6.

6 men, definitely overweight.

Throw in density altitude… yikes.

It’s a tank, but CG and + gross weight become a massive issue.

I figured as such. I’ve flown a few aircraft such as the C207 that in theory could fit 6 passengers but when you get into the w&b you might get away with 3-4 adults and kids in the back no baggage maybe even require ballast in the nose compartment.

I swear the manufacturers in attempts to one up each other passengers counts and “utility” instead offered pilots more efficient ways to kill their friends and family’s

Found the historic Metar

Shows a density altitude of 4800 feet.

Also came across a Cherokee Six weight and balance calculator. I plugged in 6 pax at 170 pound each with 100 pounds of bags and 30 gallons of fuel and it just works.
