I learned to fly on a grasshopper, this story is simply spellbinding and certainly brought me back in time and memories of my school boy shenanigans.

Amazing fellow. Even more amazing is that he got promoted after
doing this, to Lt Col.
One would have thought that the army bureaucracy would have brutally
punished him for destroying enemy tanks in such an unorthodox manner.
Remember, to the bureaucracy, unorthodox behaviour is a bigger problem
for them, than not getting the job done. Control, not performance is their
objective.
You may recall that much, much later, the Army finally got around to
arming helicopters similarly. Took them decades to catch up. Much
mumbling about the Key West Agreement of 1947.
On a similar note, has anyone tried letting a bucket out the side on a long
rope when you're in a turn at low altitude? The same principle is used for this:
