That's a seriously cool picture, someone ought to sell a poster of it.  I'm a little surprised the shock waves off the lead plane don't have more impact on the second but then again I'm a folk engineer at best.

They do.  My father - seriously shitty pilot - used to fly close supersonic
formation in F-104's and he says that considerable aileron trim is required.

Ask Arlo and Rotten Ronnie for the lowdown.
