In many cases its got to be one of the worst jobs in aviation, which I'll add has gotten worse over the years, since most of the customers seem to bring an adversarial approach to their training anymore. Its very little wonder that few stay in it.

I seldom toot my own horn, but I was an awesome instructor.  I held my students to a higher standard than my peers did and still saw a 100% success rate, including with those who had been given up on by their own instructors.  Still, I grew weary of my profession being shit on nonstop so I moved on.

Some days I think about getting back into it, but it's usually fleeting.  Do CFIs make much these days?

The only way to be involved with flight training is to have
your own shop.  The only problem with that, is you are
going to have to push a mountain of paper, and kiss ass
at TC.

You really want your own FTU OC and AMO.  Both are a
giant waste of time because of the incredible paperwork
required.  Good luck with your PRM interrogation and your
MCM.  Suggestion:  have a photographic memory and
have it memorized ahead of time - every page.

Most people look at this stinking pile of BS and conclude,
maybe I'll take up golf.  Which is a victory for TC - they
get to lower the level of flight training once again.

I kind of wonder how Ontario region would handle a flying club as opposed to a FTU.  It would cut an enormous amount of BS and I think a lot of control could be maintained through a well thought out club charter.  It *should* be completely legal but I assume the big schools would be ratting it out constantly to TC.

It would be entirely possible with the main problem that most clubs have grown to require to become FTUs. They are only "clubs" in name. Past a threshold, they need to be run like a business.

That may be so but my understanding was that if you have customers taking lessons it's a FTU but if you have owners it's a flying club.  FTUs and their requirements have a lot of real estate in the CARs whereas flying clubs do not.  To pull it off for any length of time you'd probably need a lawyer running it.

I remember a guy in Kingston, he had 20 people on a
temporary C of R.  His deal was that for $100 people
would buy a share in a buck fifty, and he would put their
name on the C of R, and they would be an "owner"
and he could teach their PPL.  They could have their
$100 back anytime and he would take their name off
the C of R.

Naturally TC hounded him until he caved and got an
FTU OC and all the bullshit that goes along with it.

Didn't matter that he obeyed the letter of the law -
the government crushed him.

Remember in Ontario, it's worse than that.  You
have the Ontario "Career College" police - they
actually show up and wave their badges around -
and demand that if you made the mistake of getting
an FTU OC, you must pay them tens of thousands
of dollars, even if you don't take money on account,
and by definition aren't a college, and clearly are
not subject to their empowering legistlation.

They are the government, and they don't care.

I remember a few years back, they raided the
Rockcliffe Flying Club and took all their logbooks
until RFC paid them tens of thousands of dollars
to get all the student's PTR's and logbooks back.

I wish I was making this crap up.

Ontario is such a train wreck, in so many different
ways.

I wonder how many people will not buy groceries
this winter, in order to pay their electrical bill in
Ontario?
Horrobin said his church has either helped people pay outstanding hydro bills or given them pre-paid grocery cards because they can’t afford groceries after paying for electricity.
Oh, Canada.  When will you tell your government
that enough is enough?
