Strangely enough rope starting was not uncommon back in the day -- chuck -- pig boat ????? 2 engines, one rope, one starter ---- Watching the video those guys had it figured --

Damn Chuck the print has shrunk -- so which was more difficult -- the snow machine or the DC-3 -- I much prefer to hand spank rather than a rope  ;D

Last time I risked a trip to The People's Republic of
Canada, I hand-bombed a 300hp angle-valve IO-540
with a dead battery.  It hadn't run in two years, AFAIK.

The rope trick would have been a hell of a lot less
work.

The trick is to prime it just right.

I have rope started a DC-3 - fairly straight forward.

We had the rope on the prop dome wrapped so that it moved forward as it unwrapped. The truck also pulled at an angle so that the rope would pull/be thrown clear after engine start.

I guess this is no longer considered acceptable in the PC driven world?

I've heard of hand propping large radials - never seen it done.
