passengers on board an AirAsia flight that was forced to return to Australia were told by the captain to "say a prayer"
Listen, the Monty Python cockpit sketch was
just a joke, ok?

And for next time, when an engine starts
behaving that badly, just shut it down.  You
still have another engine, on the other wing.

Any questions, ask the guy sitting on your
right.  The airline pays him to be there to help
you with stuff like this.

Wasn't the engine shutdown?
Perhaps it was windmilling or airflow over some damage part set up the vibrations?

Blade separation and windmilling engine.

I've played a small role on a new aircraft program over the past few years including the engine integration. Blade-out vibrations are one of the most severe cases designed for, and probably the worst that doesn't involve large holes in the airframe.

I just reviewed the "Emergency Procedures" check list for my aircraft and could not find "Beseech a Higher Power" anywhere...

A checklist clearly written by godless heathens. You need to douse your airplane with holy water while reciting the rosary. Bonus points for "Jesus is my copilot" bumper stickers.
