What are the ups and downs, pardon the pun of owner maintenance?

Say I had a 152 and decided I didn’t care about resale value and just wanted to fly it and I knew my way around a wrench and lock wire. What’s the deal ?

I think the downside is no US flying.

It’s too bad the FAA doesn’t see OM as at least as good as a homebuilt but here we are.

I’ve never understood the rationale behind that. The fact that a plane can be built totally by an amateur say a Pitts and it has no such restrictions.

Heck we all have seen some airplanes maintained and signed off by AME or AP down south that is less airworthy than something maintained by a amateur wrench turner

Yeah, I know. Hard to tell any real difference between a homebuilt and owner maintenance.
