Rust on Oil Cap

Took the cowls off and did a good clean of the belly today and inspecting everything I could and noticed this on my oil cap.

I brought this home to take some emery cloth or Dremel to it. Any tips or suggestions ?

I know many advocate for popping the oil cap off after a flight let any moisture evaporate.

Don’t look inside the filler tube it screws into.

Not a fan of painting or chroming this stuff. When it flakes off, it starts circulating inside your engine.

When I land I like to open it to allow the hot air to convectively carry the moisture out.

Popped the gasket out and got to work. It looks pretty good now.

Same one as when I took it off I’ll rub some oil around it when I install it tomorrow.

Spruce sells them in both 1/8 and 1/16 thickness in that nice orange stuff

Different than a fuel cap - a new gasket keeps the oil cap tight so it doesn’t unscrew.

Let me know which one you want and I’ll mail it to you. I live just up I-5 from Corona. I have 3 shipments from Spruce in UPS right now.

It looks pretty new, ill take a closer look at the rear engine see what shape its in the engines only have 280 and 80 hours on them total.

Is there a difference between a red one and black one?

If your oil caps go on tight don’t bother.

I like the “real” orange gaskets. Great for rocker covers.

The important thing is the dimensions and the material must resist petroleum solvents.

The rest is cosmetic.
