Ink on Pilots

I was waiting for a time to ask this when there was less carnage but the GA world does not seem to be letting up. I was told a long while ago that tattoo's were not really acceptable in aviation, I would like to hear from each area if possible? Instructing, Charter, Airline, whatever your business may be. In the military a lot of the pilots are from other trades so it is not uncommon at all to see a pilot with "death" tattoo'd across his knuckles. I have a few, I have stopped mine just shy of my collar on the back of my neck, you can just see some of them on my collar bones, and upper chest, and I stopped my arms at my wrist.

I have no ink. You don't put bumper stickers on a Cadillac.

I guess that is one of our differences Squaretail, I have always treated mine like more of an amusement park ride I guess,

I know a few who have lots of ink but they are covered with long sleeves shirts etc. It might be off putting to some to see their pilot with a face/neck tattoo, honestly I have not see that before but i'm sure they exist.
It can be interesting to see people out side of work or at the hotel with the tats showing.

They’re becoming more common/acceptable in general society, aviation will follow.

They are definitely becoming pretty normal, I just checked and you can't see any of mine with long sleeve buttoned up. I get that an airline may not be as on board but I hope instructing and maybe medivac would okay with it.

Just tell them you identify as pan sexual/asexual/non-binary and your ink is for emotional support.

I know you're joking, but I know someone that told their insurance company
that they now identified as non-binary and they got a HUGE discount.

I know guys with sleeves, they just wear sleeves. The guiding sentiment in most company rules is to not draw undue attention. This would also extend to piercings, hair colour and style, and my personal favourite in my company’s literature, “The presence or absence of undergarments shall not be obvious.”
