Let's say you are producing a movie or a television show.

As part of the production, you want to film an aeroplane landing on a public roadway.

Needless to say, you'll need the cooperation of various authorities, once a suitable road is found.

You'll need permission from the owners of the road (municipality, province, etc), and you'll need the local police to close the road for the duration of the shoot. Firefighters and EMS on hand as well.

Naturally they'll have some questions about the capabilities of your aircraft and your pilot, but you plan to use a fully aerobatic plane, operated by a licenced aerobatic pilot, so there shouldn't be a problem.

What other permissions would you need before you could shoot this scene?

We used to land on rural roads all the time in Southern Ont. with the crop dusters.

Never thought to ask permission.

Should we have?

I think it's different nowadays if you're filming it.  People that aren't in any way affected will raise a big fuss.  They just don't comprehend harmless fun, maybe they need to have some of their own.

You were flying those dusters around the time I was born. You could do a lot of stuff when I was a kid that you could never do now. I mean, as kids we lived on peanut butter sandwiches; nowadays if you send your kid to school with a peanut butter sandwich they'll crucify you.

I doubt anyone in tobacco country back in those days gave two sheets where you landed as long as it wasn't on their roof.  :))

But even way back then, landing on, say, Lakeshore Blvd in front of the Palais Royale would have had some unpleasant consequences if performed without permission from somebody, don't you think?

Touch and goes on the Alaska and Dempster highways for practice up north but no one was around. I would incorporate that into my line indoc of the new guys, they would say "really?" then after their first one they realized it could be done safely without much trouble. It funny they had a mindset that doing so was more dangerous than some of the bush strips we would go in to all the time. 

Actually I got the idea from a "deputy minister" for the government, I bombed him up to Beaver Creek from HJ one summer during massive forest fires. Lets just say we followed the highway closely due to smoke and limited vis, he said I should practice doing just that as it might save my bacon one day as he had a few friends who had done the same when it hit the fan. Its funny how some politicians who live in the north get it, unfortunately he was waay to smart to become more than a deputy and went back to the private sector shortly after.

As for movie shots I would try and find out if there is a local film board or guild whatever they call it and contact them.

All we need is permission from whatever Municipality we are in .
Plus the services of the Local Police to shutdown the road

Thanks, that's the answer I was looking for. So you don't notify the regulator at all?

Last time we did a shoot was in St Catherines Ontario 
We were using a rural road with permission from the City
As a courtesy , we informed TC but they had no desire to be involved.
We set up road blocks thru the police Dept and let the Local Fire Dept know what was happening for safety sake.

Had an old room-mate of mine who flew out of southeastern MB's biggest flight school on his little C150, but lived in a little town some 40-50 nm away. He went home for the weekends and landed on a back-country road because the drive home from the airport (about 4-5 km) was "too long". Tucked the airplane away into the back yard before pulling it out on Monday morning.

This was during his CPL and Instructor Rating :P
