I get that for bigger aircraft, but because of the way they instruct I figured it was wrong in a C172.

Obviously the distance back that one changes attitude is proportionate to the size of the aircraft. The Shuttle just demonstrates the principle more obviously. All airplanes need to transition to a nose up attitude at some part of the landing sequence.
