Someone found the original guest book for Pancho’s Place. The first entry was Chalmers. I don’t know if they had a falling out later or not.
The Tom Wolfe movie, may have painted him in a particular way he disagreed with.
It was already running long (Even if I would have watched a much longer version.) and it was about the USA being the greatest country in the world and how they ran the Mercury program, the first part of sending military guys to the moon.
They decided to make him a bad guy for asking for more money. Having Ms. Barnes roll her eyes at him was part of the show.
Some of the best dialogue in the movie, is when Jeff Golblum and the other guy from Bell sign up Yeager, and then on the way out talked about how much the Air Force was paying him.

One fact I know about Amelia is that she is dead but everyone knows her name.
Kind of reminds me of this clip from a terrible movie
