I spent many years trying to convince people
that there was value in performing well above
the minimum legally specified standard, because
of the obvious decoupling between the regulatory
world, and the far more demanding real world.

I don't think I was very successful.  So many people
think that if they meet the bare minimums, and
have a piece of paper, that they are set for life
and can coast.

Not a chance, I'm in a better place in life because I flew with a few captains and training pilots that pulled the reins on me a bit early on in my career. I may have felt a little butt-hurt by it in my youth, but I got over it fast and am a better pilot for people that held some standards in the cockpit. Kill bad habits early, it's a disservice to the industry if you don't.

People allowed to slide learn their lessons around burned metal. Smarten up, this isn't a game, it's not a popularity contest, sometimes feelings need to be hurt.

Here are the three most common poor flying skills I observed


As I have previously stated I have hired many many pilots over the past half century and the same three sloppy inept airplane handling skills were demonstrated by almost every substandard applicant.


(1) Controlling taxi speed with brakes and not reducing power.


(2) Chasing airspeed in the climb and climbing in a roller coaster profile.


(3) The inability to fly a constant approach on centre line and landing way off the centre line.


Those were the most common problems and they show the training industry is substandard.

My point all along was he refused to fly with the guy.

Sure, you could have embarrassed him by demonstrating how to land on the centerline every time, but why? Just send him packing.

I refused to fly with him because he refused to fly the airplane as I had requested....


..fly the approach on centre line and land on the centre line.


That is basic flying at the student PPL level.


When he called the company to complain that I was being unfair there was only one possible outcome that would allow him to refuse to comply with my request he follow my instructions.


The company had to promote him to captain and demote me to First Officer.


That did not happen.


Insubordination can not be tolerated in a two crew airplane.

Keeping in mind I am under the impression the problem, is failing to land on the center line.
