Flying IFR with two VOR's (but no DME, LORAN or GPS) I used to use
one VOR to fly the Victor airway, and the other VOR for cross-radials,
assuming there were other VOR's nearby. That was pretty normal,
I thought.
You could do the same thing with a single VOR as long as it had a
flip-flop standby (at the risk of wearing out your OBS) but if you had
a single older VOR like a KX170B which was manually tuned, well,
that sucked.
VOR's were ok (except for the scalloping - hold your heading) as long
as you could get some altitude. But with low freezing altitude for much
of the year, that wasn't often the case. VOR's sucked moose cocks at
low altitude.
Back in the 70's I used this horrible thing, which I'm pretty sure you
can't find outside of a museum today:

It’s so weirdly satisfying to change frequencies on those things the way they just kind of go *KA-CHUNK-CHUNK-CHUNK*
Back in the 70's I used this horrible thing, which I'm pretty sure you

I loved the timer in the KR87 ADF, for doing holds and procedure
turns. No vectors to final in Canada.
To save money, generally only one VOR had a (UHF) GS - the other was LOC
only.
I was never much of a fan of anything Narco.

Oddly, my phone is the best nav I've ever had. Works fine
for trans-continental flights, admittedly with external power.

KNS80, enter four VOR freqs and you go direct. Flew a 172RG with one. Didn't work to well on flights up north.

I still have an ADF in my bird. Great for listening to Rush Limbaugh.
Sadly it’s gotta go to make room for the 430.
I use foreflight on the iPad, but it’s starting to suck so much battery. I have a 12v adapter but it barely puts out enough juice to charge it. Not enough amps I suspect.

There are many different USB power amperages ... you probably
have the basic 500mA - you need an adapter that puts out multiple
amps - it will make a HUGE difference, as the iPad can take MUCH
more than .5 A ... probably around 2.5A if memory serves.
