I love Andy Varipapa myself. What a great bowler he was.
Not to ruin a good thing here but... my favorite mag advice from you, was to use "Slick Mags" then just trade them in occasionally during annual inspections.

Never over 400 CHT in the climb
Never below 300 CHT in the descent
Change all the accessories every 500 hours, replace with new
Change all the cylinder/pistons/exhaust every 1000 hours, replace with new

Any suggestions in the situation where the engine won't be getting into the air right away? I'm thinking mainly homebuilt where there will be (hopefully minimal) ground testing before the engine can be run at high power in the air for break in. Get the engine shop to run it well on the dyno?

These days you can actually seat the rings on the dyno.
Back in the day, I know guys that would instrument their
crankcase pressure with a manometer to measure the
ring blow-by.
As each set of rings seated, you could see a step down
in blowby.
A very crude measurement of this is oil temperature.
When you see the sudden drop in oil temperature,
the very hot combustion gases are no longer getting
past the rings into the oil sump.
Breaking an engine in, is all about seating the rings.
Extended taxiing with no dyno run may very well
require cylinder honing and a new set of rings.
I once saw Freddy take a straw full of comet and
blow it into the spark plug hole of a cylinder that
didn't seat.

Was away from foruming for a while so the update is that I checked the mags and they are ok. The plugs were weak. There is an engine issue that I will have to address soon as well

There are aircaft out there with 10 and 20 year old spark plugs.
