Watched a show tonight on A&E about some outfit that does helo rescue around mt Everest ... As of the machines (350B3) have some "box" that is mounted on the dash that is some indicator.. Any idea what it is?

Without having seen the clip, I'm guessing; but, could it have been a gauge to show the load on a hook?

Thats what I was kind of thinking as well.. but if that was the case.. would you install it on the dash?

I've found AStars fitted with hook dynamometers, but couldn't find a picture...

We call the "hook weight" gauge the torquemeter.  :)

Rule of thumb we use is 200lbs/1% of torque. But I fly something a little bigger than an Astar...

  Like John said, I'd have to see the picture to get a better idea.

Here is a screen shot from a vid I found on youtube...  is it a hook load gauge?  This is the machine that landed on the summit, so I would be surprised to learn "extra" gear would have been installed on the machine for this particular mission...
