I read someone had reported it as a hard landing in fog.

Never ascribe malice for something that can be explained by the exercise of mere incompetence.
A 35 year old helicopter “maintained” without any manufacturer support flying in the mountains in very poor weather. What could possibly go wrong ?

It's probably far worse than that. The pilot was probably the nephew of someone importantWhat could possibly go wrong?
and not the best choice. Not having a meritocracy is a bad decision, and bad decisions have
bad consequences.
Worse than that, the pilot probably wasn't able to say "no", even if he thought it was suicidal.
They would probably cut off his head or something similar. I've been fired twice before I landed.
That's why I'm still alive. Everyone else I knew is dead.
-- edit --
Funny how people hate meritocracies. A guy from Google once made the mistake of saying,
"Why don't we just hire the best candidate?" and they fired his ass.
Most of the time, this kind of poor decision just makes companies less efficient, but when you
are carried into the ER on a stretcher, are you worried if the hospital met it's DEI goals?

I saw another meme where he said, “Take me to Tehran.” then the pilot entered terrain into the FMS.
