If he learned to fly that good using flight sim why do we need flying schools?

Flight schools produce paper, not pilots.

If a pilot with knowledge and skill somehow accidentally
emerges from a flight school, it is merely a happy coincidence,
not entirely unlike you shitting out a diamond ring the morning
after a legendary alcohol-fueled and drug-crazed night of partying
during which you mistakenly ate your hosts charcoal briquettes
thinking that they were merely over-done hamburger, but that's
not important right now.

And if they can do a proper crosswind landing it is a miracle.


You wouldn't believe the number of licensed pilots ( it was difficult to tell the difference between PPL and ATPL ) I had as students that had zero clue about how to perform a proper crosswind landing.

I was recently talking to a nice young man that had purchased
a taildragger.  I brought up the subject of crosswind landings,
and [b]no one[/b] had ever taught him to put the stick all the way over
into the crosswind as he slowed down, to utilize adverse yaw
to oppose weathervaning.

I am not making this up.  Pilots today have paper, not knowledge
and skill.

Like the geniuses that didn't bother to switch to the mains before
landing, and ran the outboards bone dry.  Jesus.  Was that a
"learning experience", to discuss during their airline interview?

It's amazing the level of realism in the latest generation of Flight Sim programs.
Everything works the same as in the real aircraft. Including programming the Flight Management Computer.

There are plenty of videos on YouTube on how to start up a 'dark' aircraft.
A little study and some practice will get you a long way!
From what I understand he was planning to crash off the barrel roll - even he was surprised he made it!
Sad thing to have happen - could have been a lot worse than one death and the loss of one aircraft.
