People thought you couldn't do a vertical-eight
in a stock S-2B.  We did it in formation - in Alabama
for Curtis Pitts, actually, who thought it was pretty neat.

Start out at 1500 feet, side by side, upright.  Lead
calls the 1/2 roll inverted - as wing you always 1/2
roll towards the lead - you stabilize inverted, power
up, down you go to the surface, side by side, speed
building rapidly.  You level briefly to establish a
horizontal line, but not long enough to bleed speed.

Lead pushes the stick forward for the first 1/2 outside
loop upwards.  He needs to carefully manage the G so
that you have enough altitude for later, but enough
airspeed for the immediate top inside loop.

No 1/2 roll - you are now upright, and at 120 mph
the lead pulls oh-so-gently into the top inside loop.

It's a ridiculously slow solo loop entry.  Ask Bruce
Evans.  You're doing it on fucking wing at Clmax
and zero airspeed over the top.  Careful with the
effects of the prop - don't torque off!

You complete the top inside loop, power is all the
way back, you are trying to not slide ahead of the
lead as he establishes the gate for last segment -
the half outside loop down the to surface.

Stick goes forward, the negative G increases, the
speed builds rapidly through the vertical, the blood
fills your head violently, the effect of bank is reversed,
and you have the wildest fucking visuals as you look
over and fly wing on one of the finest sticks in the world.

He fucks up, you are dead.  See the four Thunderbirds
in 1982.  Civilians have no comprehension of the level
of trust.

You level off inverted at the surface, side by side,
going like the clappers of Christ, throttle is up
with lots of kinetic energy for the next vertical
maneuver at the end of the runway.  It's a side
by side push, but it's upwards, so it's no big deal.

Congratulations.  You have just flown a maneuver
which only a tiny handful of pilots in the world will
ever master.  That's pretty cool.  And it's an honor to
fly wing on a pilot that was greatly admired by G/C
Blackie Williams, DFC DSO.

Canadians today probably think Blackie Williams
is a piece of shit compared to them, but the men
who flew for him had other opinions.

As my mom used to say, don't pat yourself on the back too much, you might break your arm. I wonder about you sometimes, Hedley.

I'm sorry that I am not a GOOD PERSON like these heroes.

I will try to be more like them, because they are GOOD CANADIANS.

Curtis Pitts and Blackie Williams are each worth a million of them.

I'll go with their opinions, even if that makes me a BAD PERSON.

And pretty please, post video of you flying your personal shiny
high performance aircraft with great skill at low altitude.

Harry Harrison fucking nailed it in 1960.

Thanks for making me puke first thing in the morning Andy. Photos of these people should be banned.

“He fucks up, you are dead”.

True statement:  the wingmen put their complete trust in the lead.

“See the four Thunderbirds in 1982”

Although small solace for the families of the pilots, the blame for the accident can’t be laid at the feet of the lead.  Those lads were doomed the moment they hit vertical on the way down…

It sounds dumb when you try to put it into words,
and the little people will mock you for trying.

But flying with my son is a hoot.  19 years old,
Freddy signed off on his formation ICAS card.

Most of our routine, I was lead, and he flew wing,
which was awesomely impressive.  The jealous
little people will throw rocks from the shadows,
but Fern Villeneuve watched him fly and said,
"He's miles ahead of anyone else".

But for one segment, he takes the lead and
I tuck in tight on right echelon.  Down we
go, level off upright low, and he pulls through
the vertical to the inverted 45 downline.  A half
cuban eight.

I like it steeper, actually.  There's nothing
magical about 45 degrees and 60 keeps the
x-axis tighter and I think looks better.

So we are inverted, steep and low, and I
am flying negative G wing on a 19 year old
flying inverted lead, and I am trusting to his
judgement and skill that he can gauge the
push so that we apogee nice and low and
centered, inverted.

He continues to push upwards and flies a
gentle spiraled 1/2 roll to the upright, me
tucked in on right wing the entire time.

Takes a bit of trust.  Wild visuals, and although
the jealous haters will jeer, it's a fucking
incredible accomplishment for a teenager,
who is a 4th generation biplane pilot.  100
years in aviation.

But we are scum compared to you straight and
level guys, like this 20,000TT airline pilot, that
tried to fly solo aerobatics:

Keep telling me what shit we are, compared to you.

False modesty is the refuge of the incompetent

And on that subject, here's another car from my parking
lot, that I walked past at lunch.

Almost certainly a piece of shit compared to what the
haters drive.  They are GOOD PEOPLE, after all.

Sounds cool but Curtiss Pitts died over a decade ago. I must be missing something.

Nah, we're not jealous, it's just that you're a complete dick. We respect people like Harrison Ford who have nice toys and aren't complete assholes.

And owning a Porsche 911 Carrera isn't exactly something to envy. People who own Porsches are invariably complete twats, and its engine noise is kind of agricultural. I used to earn shitloads of money working at companies like that (and owned a proper sports car), but you don't see me boasting about it and posting ridiculous pictures. I now do something more interesting. A guy who owned a Porsche was late for a meeting with me last week because he had a puncture and was too lazy or useless to be able to change the tire himself, so he had to call a tow truck!

Sorry you have to earn your money contracting for companies like Blackberry with boring people who drive Porsches, but don't take it out on us.
