Piper Malibu

On May 1, 2019, a Piper PA-46-350P Malibu departed Goose Bay airport (CYYR) in Labrador bound for Narsarsuaq airport (BGBW) in Greenland. The flight departed on a VFR flight plan, planning to fly below adverse weather and wind conditions at an altitude of 2,000 feet asl before climbing to higher altitudes and air-filing an IFR flight plan for the remainder of the journey. However, the experienced and professional ferry pilot flew the Malibu into a 2,250-foot hill just before reaching the Atlantic Ocean, striking the hillside at about 200 feet below its summit. The pilot survived, but his passenger was killed.

The Transportation Safety Board (TSB) classifies this as a Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT) accident. Read the full report and its recommendations in the first PDF appended below.

Like stated - "No new causes for aviation accidents" - it was likely one of those final "Oh fuck" moments.

Looked like a newer model, you think the taws or at least terrain map would have been yelling at him.

Fast airplane and VFR under the Wx is not always a good combination.

No one remembers, but in the late 1970's ATC went on strike and an
airplane full of Falconbridge execs hit a tower. Couldn't get an IFR
clearance from ATC, who were on strike. @ssholes.

Thanks for the help, ATC! Don't let the doorknob hit you in the @ss
on the way out.

No new causes, indeed. No one learns. No one even remembers.

I do, which is why I don't know anything about aviation, I am told.

As mentioned "staying low" because of headwinds, I can't count the number of times I've had this discussion. Climb it's that simple and the gained true airspeed will go a long way to offsetting the headwind. I don't get it, sit in the sunshine, smooth air and add a few minutes to your flight or stay low and get the shit kicked out of you and yes, impact a hill. It always has seemed to be a no brainer to me but then again grey hair gentlemen know fuck all.
