We always called it the "silly season". Seems that people are always trying to think of novel ways to get to the poles. Usually ending up in a large cluster fuck with it costing millions to rescue these idiots. 

Yeah, I suppose the South Pole is a bit tricky.

Kitplanes November and December 2015 issues chronicled Bill Harrelson's around-the-world north-south record flight.  Looks like his Lancair IVP is a different weight class than the RV-8.  Quite a project, lots of logistics and it still go to hell in an instant.  I'd opine the Lancair is a more capable airplane than the RV, I wish him well.

hmm maybe hes onto something, lets put together Scuds Environmental Tour of Hope for the Planet. Get me an DC-8 and fly around the world studying the effects of Chemtrails on beer and wings in different cities.
