A man, 32, has been charged with flying without a licence, dangerous operation of an aircraft and obstructing a police officer after taking a float plane for a joy flight and crashing it near Mitchell's Pond in Jeffrey's, in western Newfoundland Thursday night.
Joint Rescue Coordination Centre was alerted to the incident around 7:00 p.m. after the plane flipped upside down, sending an automatic beacon distress message.
RCMP and the Bay St. George South Fire Department responded to the scene where they found the passenger, 59, walking away from the crash with minor injuries. He was taken to hospital while police tried tracking down the plane's operator, 32.
The wannabe pilot was located in a pickup truck trying to flee the scene. He's since been arrested and charged under the Criminal Code and the Aeronautics Act. He also sustained minor injuries from the incident.
The Cessna 180 plane was found inverted, nose-down in a forested area near Mitchell's Pond. Police found the crashed aircraft about 500 metres from the pond.
Police don't believe the pair involved were in flight for long based on how far the crash was from the aircraft's hangar.
The plane's owner is related to both men involved. His Cessna 180 was taken without his consent. A charge of theft over $5,000 is still being investigated.
The plane's operator will appear before court at a later date.
