Training in VR

I had an interesting experience the other day. I tried out a friends VR headset and hand thingys on a flight simulator. Although it's not a Class D sim, I can say it is the single most realistic simulation of flying that you can get outside of a Class D. I'm going to do some more tests with the system, but I expect that for our company (we do on the wing training) it has the potential to reduce our training costs substantially by allowing us to do batting practice essentially in the real cockpit.

For the curious, it was an Oculus Quest 2 hooked up to X-Plane 11, the real amazing thing is it was completely wireless and so immersive it was frightening.

Anybody else try out VR?

I’ve tried a couple of different ones for my last job. There are some really good ones out there.

Does he have foot rests? How about the new MS flight sim. I'm tempted to get that.

It’s an amazing tool, I played with a demo sort of thing at a airshow exhibit a few years ago.

Just the muscle memory or practicing flows for noobs or even new type ratings is much better than say the “paper tiger” (that’s what we called them for some reason)

I think we’ve all been there on a new type sitting in the hangar going through each switch and checklist to get familiar with the cockpit this lets you keep practicing and potentially could keep you sharper than just once a year or six months at sim.

KLM started using VR for the Embraer training last year.
