Maintenance run up - what could possibly go wrong?

Good thinking to steer away from the hangar and run into another expensive aircraft - of course closing the thrust levers and then hitting the brakes would have been better!

At my Airline Engineers are not allowed to taxi or do run ups - mandatory to have a Captain in the left seat. Smart policy.

Sure it's expensive but for us gawkers... That's some great entertainment.

Maybe you should tell us why your airline policy was made, with pictures supplied by the way.

Certainly - our Engineers are not trained to taxi the aircraft. It requires a course (including SIM training) to qualify for engine runs.

I have been called on my standby to come to the MRO and taxi the aircraft out to the run up area and do a high power run on 1 engine then taxi the aircraft back to the MRO. Engineers in the right seat and jumpseat.

A smarter and safer way of doing things imho.

Things can go wrong very quickly - as these guys discovered:-

They were very lucky nobody was killed imho.

At first I was thinking, not only no, but fuck no, if the company called to have me come do an engine run. 
However, that’s a minimum 5hours of pay. Almost worth the 3hr round trip to O’hare. 

I get paid 4 hours sitting at home on reserve, if I’m not called out as it is.

My company will always have at least one set of crew on standby wherever the aircraft is.

On this occasion I was standby in a hotel on the other side of the airport from the MRO - didn't take long to get to the aircraft.
