Today:

Was that a "good job" or a "learning experience"?

From the video it is clear the pilot must have been
an imposter, and knew little or nothing about aviation.

I'm not saying that's always a bad thing ...

Too much nose up  trim?

The pilot attempted a soft-field takeoff with the tailwheel
planted during the takeoff run, which is extraordinary in
a large multi-engine taildragger.

He levitated into ground effect at an airspeed which was
much too slow and the result was a stall, first on one wing,
then the other.

A normal takeoff would be to raise the tail, accelerate to
a safe speed with the mains planted, and [i]then[/i] rotate. 

I cringe to think what Chuck or LC or EricJ are going to
say about this bizarre takeoff attempt by a pilot that clearly
hated the airplane.

This is how a sane pilot takes off in a large taildragger -

TC [i]loves[/i] soft and short field takeoffs.  They want the student
to practice them long before they have mastered a normal or
crosswind takeoff, for some demented reason.  I remember a
few years back, the FTU at Rockcliffe actually listened to this
nonsense - hey, it's a government town, don't expect too much -
and the resulting pile of wrecked Cessnas was really impressive.

That accident is so bizarre I kind of wonder if some level of pilot incapacitation played a part.

Wouldn't any kind of three point take-off also put you below VMC and therefore be a no-no in a twin tail dragger?

Not to mention at or the critical angle of attack.


I just can not figure out how they managed to do that because it takes a real determined pilot to keep the tail wheel pinned on the ground with the mains in the air.
