Well, Eric had fun this morning

Remember, turbines never fail.  This is why us guys that fly
piston should be nervous all the time.  Remember, piston
engines have eyeballs and get afraid at night and over water.

So, this morning Eric and a shitload of parachutists are in
the back of a Caravan, and there was a loud squeal and a
yaw, followed by everyone bailing out.  Fortunately the pilot
remembered to

LOWER THE NOSE

so they didn't stall/spin, and all the jumpers were able to
get out the door.  The DZ sent a pickup truck around to
collect everyone.

Remember, turbines never fail.

So, this afternoon Eric came over and we did the front
right brake on his car which also started to squeal.
Personal best, about an hour, included new fluid and
bleeding the air out, with new rotor, pads and caliper:

Remember, turbines never fail, which is why us piston
guys that have no mechanical ability are all fucked.

BTW, this is why disc brakes squeal when they are worn out:

The above is a picture of the old caliper, removed as one piece
with the pads still in it.  On the right you can see the thicker
pad which was on the outside of the rotor, and are actually
externally visible if you peek through the wheel with a flashlight
at the correct angle.

On the left you can see the thinner pad on the inside of the
rotor.  It is not easy to visually inspect for wear, so they put
a little whistle on it - a bent piece of sheet metal that vibrates
when it touches the rotor when the pad is badly worn.

It's talking to you, and with a few tools and very little time,
you can repair it yourself, if you're a piston guy like me with
very little mechanical ability, who is fucked because he doesn't
fly an ultra-reliable turbine.

I had that explained to me rather condescendingly at the bar one time.  After a while I mentioned that he must be mistaken because that very same morning I had brought the work plane home on one (turbine) engine.  Turns out I was still wrong as what he meant to say was the PT-6 can't fail.  Good to know.

With that in mind, it looks you'd live a lot longer with this:
the PT-6 can't fail

On October 3, 1999, the Turbo Raven was destroyed after the (PT6A-25C) engine failed to deliver power ...
Handley was seriously injured
That would have killed most people.  Happened at Salinas,
just south of here.
