Instructing on float planes.

I have decided to get my medical renewed and do float plane instructing for Randy Hanna for the summer.

I am really bored and need something to do so thought that would be a good way to spend some of my time.

What do all of you out there think about me going back to work at my age?

I have noticed that as you age, while it is tougher to learn
new things, stuff that you have done before, you can do
very well.  Well-worn electrochemical tracks in your brain,
or something along those lines.

FWIW:

I am teaching my last flight instructor rating, and frankly
what I teach on the ground, before and after the flight, is
far more important than what goes on in the cockpit.

It's great fun wiggling the controls, don't get me wrong,
but you need to have a solid grounding in the theory before
you move onto the practice.  It really accelerates your learning,
and avoids you repeating your mistakes (eg 100 hrs to PPL).

I am sure most people would disagree with me, and that is
why this is my last instructor rating.

IMHO:

There is so much knowledge that you need to pass on, Chuck!

Stuff that is so fucking obvious to you and me and LC is really
new stuff to the kids.

When people come to me, years later, and tell me that the
knowledge and skills I passed on to them, allowed them to
avoid an accident, well, that's pretty cool.

Remember that while you must teach them what TC wants
for them to get the paper, the other, real world knowledge
is far more important.

Well I got an appointment for my medical renewal.

However I am finding getting information from T.C. on how to renew my license booklet to be a bit more problematic, phoning them is a circle jerk of automatic transfers form one number to another ending in a message that they are to busy to answer the phone and to busy to accept voice messages.

But they did give me a e-mail address that so far has been answered by another message telling me they received my e-mail and it is in their system.

I think I should make an appointment for a mental examination for deciding to try and get back into aviation.

Anyone here know what I should do to get my license booklet or whatever it is called renewed?

First of all, I suspect this is going to delay the completion of your homebuilt.  And that, in itself, is a worthy use of time.  The choice is up to you.

You are in far better shape then me if you are able to dance around on floats and able to make those occassional very fast movements getting out of the plane when the student surprises you...Go for it!

As far as TC is concerned.  They have an 800 number where they take the information and pass it on.  In the last few years I have used both that and email and the results have been excellent.  The TC that you and I had experienced in the past seems to have improved dramatically.  Gone from the time that we would try to snag them with a wing if we caught them out on the ramp, to really great service.  But it is a beauracracy, so your experience might be different.

Fortunately I am still in real good physical shape as far as being active goes, in fact I can gain a stroke changing hands.  :)

I have got the process started with a medical date ( Mar 13 ) and a e-mail to T.C. so hopefully things will go well.

You need a passport photo, and you need to download and fill out a form:

https://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/ ... oklet.html
https://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/ ... s-1814.htm

Here's the form you need to click on, fill out and print off:

http://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Corp-Serv-Gen/5 ... 0726_BO_PX

You need to mail it as follows:
http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/o ... ns-139.htm

which in your case is

Pacific Region (British Columbia)
Transport Canada
820 - 800 Burrard Street
Vancouver, British Columbia
V6Z 2J8
Telephone: 1-800-305-2059
Fax: 1 855 618-6288
E-mail: tc.aviationservicesPAC-servicesaviationPAC.tc@tc.gc.ca

Good news is that they are now 10 years.  I
guess Arlo had to retire before they could make
that finally happen.
