1959...The Avro Arrow was cancelled
14000 people laid off.
The aircraft cut up and destroyed.

Wonder if we will ever know the real reason.

The real reason was political made by a moron.

The aircraft and its engines were decades ahead of the rest of the world.

I used to watch the test flights at Malton Airport when it was first being flown and it was awesome.

My father was in the RCAF at the time - hell, he flew in formation
with an Arrow - and he told me that there were simply too many
other producers of fighter jets at the time (British, American, French,
Russian, etc) and no customers for it, and our domestic use of it
alone could not pay for it.

Without foreign customers, we couldn't support domestic fighter
manufacture.

Look on the bright side.  Between us and the Nazis, we trained
the engineers that made the the NASA space program possible
and put men on the moon!

Not kidding about that, btw.

Anyone who blames the PM at the time of cancellation has no idea what they are talking about. There were many other factors that lead to the Arrow's cancellation . Old Dief was the scapegoat but hardly the reason

I can't reconcile cutting them up.

I think it may have been needed to be done to prevent one getting stolen and reverse engineered, but it will always bother me.

They were already built, use them. I know the situation is more complicated yet...

The NRC was offered one but knew they couldn't afford to keep it even if it was free.  We often forget that it was just another failed airplane project at the time, kind of like being offered a D-Jet prototype now.

Seems more like a Honda Jet prototype but I see what you are saying.

If someone gave me a Cessna 310 it does not mean I can go flying wherever I want for free. Insurance and fuel will be more expensive than renting a 172 dual for two hours per year, then there is going to be other stuff.

Parking, oil, yearly inspection...
