IIRC there was also a squadron of stripped out and hot rodded Tempests late in the war who were specifically tasked with chasing down V1s.  Just imagine giving it everything to catch up with a missile so you could topple it's gyro...

I would be a tad nervous about jamming an aileron.

I had read somewhere that to topple a V1 didn't require any contact, the aerodynamic interference of getting that close was supposed to be enough.  Dissimilar types in formation and all that, I guess.

I imagine if you got in front of it and slightly above it would be in your wake and naturally turn to one side or the other.

My dad still has nightmares about the sound of those things. We found a recording on the internet one Christmas and he went white as a sheet hearing it again.

What was the reasoning for tipping them out of the air as opposed to just gunning them down?

Reminds me a bit of the batshit crazy wingtip docking methods they came up with after the war.

As I understand, V1s would explode when shot at, compared to conventional aircraft which, for the most part, would just start burning.  An angled shot was extremely tough, shooting from dead astern (and close) was the best bet to hit it.  The exploding V1 would toss all manner of shrapnel, which the shooting airplane would then have to fly through.  Tipping was a safer method.
