Adherence to Regulations, or Not.

We had an interesting presentation from a psychologist the other day.  This psychologist studies pilots and was invited to talk to us at work.  She was saying that pilots are very good at breaking rules and not getting caught.  It got me to thinking.  I am always aware of the regulations, but I tend to evaluate things more in terms of severity and probability of consequence.  This can sometimes lead to bending of the rules, but just as often it prevents me from doing something that is otherwise legal.  I think speed limits are a good example.  On an open highway in good weather I don't feel all that obligated to obey the posted speed limit.  The vehicle and the road are able to handle a fair bit more than the posted speed limit.  On the other hand, I never even get close to the speed limit in a residential area, (I've seen to may kids pop out of nowhere).  I drive like an old man in a neighborhood, much to the annoyance of some younger drivers.[Cute story, one time I was exiting my neighborhood at my customary, child-safe, snails pace when a young buck (young, dumb and full of cum in a tricked out Civic) fired by me at a high rate of knots whilst giving me the one finger salute and using his horn to draw my attention to said salute.  No problem, truly don't give a fuck.  I make it to the highway, and given that the weather is nice, assume my normal cruising speed.  A few minutes go by and I notice a familiar Civic in the left lane.  I overtake him at ~30KPH closure and flash him a polite wave and smile as I go by.  I guess being passed by a fat, grey haired guy in a 4 door Toyota upset Mr. Civic because I catch motion in my rear view.  I see the Civic pull hard into the left lane and accelerate.  Sadly, Mr. Civic was long on aggression and short on control because he overshot the lane and put his left tires in the gravel.  I don't know how the car stayed upright through the resulting spin across the left lane and into the median, but it did which meant that Mr. Civic was uninjured and I could laugh at him without chalking up (more) bad Karma.]

Back to the point at hand; How many people here tend to think in terms of severity and probability of consequence as opposed to the letter of the law?

I have complete respect for the laws of physics.

I admire people whom are certain that they can
codify safety for all of the complex circumstances
of life, in a stack of paper that's glued together
along one edge.

Because safety is sole concern and motivation for
regulation, correct?

Yup 9 out of 10 cops would agree.  8) .
But seriously if you drive daily in the toilet Toronto, you will realize that people can’t handle even the posted speed limits.
