Mig-21's on grass

180 knots on final.  Not as fast as
a medevac Citation, but still pretty
cool.

Oh, those Russians!
What's that about Citations?

I think the Colonel is referring to another post where someone mentioned that a citation crew refused to take off to go to a gravel strip of 3000 feet because they considered it unsafe.

To be fair, these guys had a lot more
than 3000 feet of grass for their MiG-21's.

But still, pretty cool.  180 knots short final,
in formation, landing supersonic fighters
on grass.  That's badass.

I really doubt the numbers worked for them.

I suspect I approach faster than their Citation
in the L39's (125 knots short final) and I don't
use all of 4,000 feet (done right, it's closer to
3,000 feet) but I'm just a dumb aerobatic pilot
that doesn't know that kinetic energy is a function
of velocity squared.

They probably needed a balanced field for
takeoff, too and I seriously doubt they had
that.

It was at night also.

Personally I did not like the fact that it was published something like, "rises 60' drops 30' rises..." Yeah that's the sort of place I want to land at night.

I hope I never drive a nose wheel into the runway but that sounds like a place where it's more likely to occur. Am I wrong about that?

Super easy with those giant tires.... Once someone that had an experience flying and landing in Russia, said that even the paved runways are rough fields  ;D

A few years back, we were taxiing out
in the two L39's, which consume 70 gph
each at idle (56% N1).

Well, someone started farting around
on the taxiway and Bob couldn't stand
it - he cut across the infield.  Not even
mowed.  Very uneven ground.  Nose
going up and down, throttle firewalled
to keep moving.

Try that in a western jet.

PS  I waited for the PPL clown to finish
fumbling on the taxiway, but I'm used
to people doing stupid and annoying
things to me.
