A lot of the warbird crowd don't make the grade when
it comes to formation (amongst many other skills).

Best to keep your distance, because they can't be
bothered to spend the time to learn.  They'd rather
strut about in flight suits on the ramp.
While the lead pilot’s job can be roughly described as not hitting the ground, the wing pilot’s job can be similarly described as not hitting the lead
That's pretty complicated.  And completely undocumented.

One last point:

Watch the video carefully.  Note that the wing during his
fucked-up joinup on the lead, tries at the last moment
to not hit the lead by putting on bank.

Wrong, wrong, wrong fucking WRONG.

I know TC hates my fucking guts because I'm the worst
pilot in Canada, but I've been saying for fucking YEARS
that to avoid a collision, you shove the stick FORWARD.

Banking is so fucking stupid.  It INCREASES the chance
of collision while doing very little to alter your trajectory.

As a complete fucking moron bonus, the wing went
blind on the lead when he banked like that.  Smooth move.

My good friend Gary Ward tried to kill me at the Oswego
airshow some years ago when he turned into me, and
-5G's solved that problem.  I had perhaps a tenth of a
second to analyze that situation and come up with the
optimal solution if I was going to live.  Somehow, despite
being the worst fucking pilot in Canada, according to TC,
I did.  Freddy saw it and he thought I was dead.

Remember, the regulator loves these idiots that had a
mid-air.  They won't get hounded for the rest of their
fucking lives despite being complete morons of the sky.

These guys should not be doing ANY kind of air display.
Despite the moronic regulator loving them and giving
them paper, they are completely untrained and ill-equipped
for low-altitude formation.

They don't know how to do anything, and they don't know
how to recover when something goes wrong, which is an
almost certain occurence for them.

I'm just a complete fucking moron compared to pilots
that the regulator showers praise over, but I love to join
up with a bucket of excess energy on the lead.  Do a
barrel roll around him.  I've done it a million fucking
times with my father and son.  It's so much fun, we
added to our show.  But we are BAD PEOPLE
so our opinions are completely fucking worthless.

I get it.

Was given a hair-raising, intentional demo of a re-join with excess smash during my formation training, followed by how to safely fix it by actually lessening the bank and G, to slide under Lead to the outside.
Then the instructor put me in that situation several times with me flying the escape until the proper reaction became instinctive.
I know about rolling around Lead to shed that smash but I also know that I'm not good enough to judge or fly that yet...

But I eventually get in there, where I should be:

I could teach you to do that in one day.  All it is, is a
gentle, inside positive G barrel roll.  It's actually easier
than a solo barrel roll (which is really an IFR maneuver)
because you have the lead as a visual reference.

Rolling around the lead is completely safe, as long as
you have nose-to-tail clearance.

Once you get some practice, you can barrel-roll around
the lead with overlapping fuselages.  It gives the lead
better visuals, as you pass overhead inverted, canopy
to canopy with him.  Eric likes it, anyways.

Just remember that if you are inverted over the lead,
you might need a little forward stick and negative G
to maintain separation.

I can do it, it's not hard, and no one taught me, and
I'm the dumbest fucking pilot in Canada, I'm told.
