Shit happens.

I see a lot of accident causes are now referred to as " Shit happens "


When I learned to fly we were not taught that way of categorising accidents.


For instance the Air Canada described their crash in Halifax as a hard landing over a thousand feet from their normal touch down point on the runway is being described as shit happens.


Help me out here, in the modern world of flying did they just walk away from it and say shit happens and that takes care of the problem?

I'm surprised you don't understand this Chuck. All you have to do is look in a mirror to realize shit happens.

What happened in bygone days in this kind of situation?  I believe the option to throw the pilot in jail for negligence in some cases is a relatively new concept but I suppose I could be wrong on that.

I thought we were the ones who wanted crashes to happen so we could learn about them.  ::)

You can't learn anything if you just resign yourself to the conclusion that 'shit happens'.

Seriously though, I don't think there is a majority of pilots today that would rather have an accident so they could learn from it than no accident, or are willing to say in all seriousness that 'shit happens'.

Maybe put up a poll on the other board to see what a wide range of posters think rather than one or two who may or may not be trolling.

I guess what I am trying to say is there has to be more to an accident than shit happens.


Every accident impacts us in some way including someone has to pay for these accidents and when insurance companies have to pay out big money to cover an accident in the end it is us the end users who pay.


Therefore we should be a bit more interested in why we have to pay more than just casually saying shit happens.


Some accidents are unavoidable like when an engine just quits in a real bad place, or when there is a failure of some part of the airframe and in these accidents the difference between a real bad ending an a good ending can sometimes be due to the crew being ahead of the airplane in their minds.


Conversely a crew that are not working to their best efforts can just be along for the ride to the accident location.
