If I remember right, on the dambusting raids, to drop the bouncing bomb at the right height in the dark the Lancaster had two lights, one on the nose the other on the tail, each angled do the two beams would touch, and the bomb aimer had a little window to observe this and instruct the pilot. A similar "light altimeter".
