As a person who is poorly paid myself, I wonder. Are pilots buying those for the fashion or because they are <$10?

It's a well-known fact that ties reduce
the blood supply to your brain.  I am
not making this up.  Google it.

Ties are for people who's jobs emphasize
appearance over performance, such as
politicians and salesmen and religious
evangelists.

Show me one case of some Executive or CEO grabbing the pilot of his Bizjet by the tie and filling in his face. Better still if they are such a choking hazard or danger to flight then how about a nice golf shirt. Honestly when I go through KTEB and take a look around at all the pilots we stand out looking like some budget flying school instructors.
how about a nice golf shirt
When I fly charters and pretend to be a
MIFR pilot, that's what I wear - golf shirt
and khakis.

Never had any complaints.

Reminds me.  About 10 years ago, I met
a guy, owned a Giles 202, called Barefoot
Johnny.  Never wore shoes.  Really.  I asked
him why he went barefoot everywhere (he
flies for Northwest) and he replied, "They
won't let me wear my cowboy boots"
