A hundred US dollars per hour for an instructor?
It's the going rate around here, for an experienced CFI, in
my recent experience.  What three different instructors charged,
thinking about it.

Maybe you can get a 200 hour wonder for less, I dunno.  I
can't imagine wanting one of those.  They don't know anything.

I'm pretty sure any of my dogs have more aviation experience
than any 200 hour instructor that doesn't know anything about
flying or teaching, for that matter:

Most of the flight schools around here charge $65/hr for the instructor (although he/she might only see $20-30 of that). If I'm paying that for a 20 year old who tells me a 45 degree bank is a spiral dive I'd be happy to shell out $100/hr for specialized instruction from someone with real world experience. If I was in the neighbourhood I'd take you up on it, I've long wanted to get that kind of flying experience.

The problem with a 200 hour instructor is more than just
them not teaching you what you don't know (and they don't
know) ...

They will also teach you all sorts of additional nonsense which
you will need to unlearn at some point.  This process can be
difficult and annoying.  It's actually far better, to teach it right
the first time.

I keep making the mistake of thinking that aviation is important,
and that it matters whether or not you do it competently.

I keep forgetting that paperwork and feelings are more
important in the 21st century, than competence.  Mea culpa.

Well, lets look at other rates

Private ski lesson.  $165 for 90;mins.
My auto machanic...$110 an hour
Flight instructor , in Canada. $65-$75 an hour.

Anybody got any other rates.  Perhaps we can shameflight schools.
I think for a class 4 they should be getting $30 an hourfrom when they show up to when they go home
Class 3 and above, if instructing only..$40

So rates should be about $90-120 an hour.
Working 8 hours aday, billing  6@ 120..$720
Pay. $320 plus $60 Holiday pay, employers portion of EI/CPP.  $380

It is up to the EMPLOYER. To make sure the instructors have three bookings, aircraft are fueled amd maintained for dispatch on time.
Minimum pay three hours if weathered out, or whatever employer wants them there.

I really do not see this as a big issue.
With career professional instructors, licenses and ratings will actually cost the student less in the long-run.

As to the original post, Chuck you seem to be a bit unfocused right now.  I get it. Retirement  can be a bitch.  But make sure what you are going to do is what you really want.  Not so long ago you were going to build a plane.  Then teach float flying...now this.

Oh, I am reasonably focused.

I already have the plane project under way and am waiting for Aircraft Spruce Canada to ship a material order I have paid for they are waiting for a couple of pieces to come from the states and I should have it by the first or second week in January.

By the way airplane aluminium and steel sure isn't cheap, this last order was $2702.00.

I have crocodile tears for you Chuck.

I think I’m close to $20k this year with Aircraft Spruce.

Ownership ain’t cheap, but hot damn it’s fun!

On another note, I have a massive hard on for the Titan T-51.  This will be my next project. The wife approves only after I sell the Stinson.

I have always wanted a Cameron Team 51 P61.  The epitome on a P51.
But alas, my owning one is tied to asuccessful investing strategy for the Lotto max, which, to date, has not yielded the required results.

If anyone has not heard of it. Check it out. Porn for pilots.  Full size, turbine powered P51....

We could go halfers on something inexpensive, like a Champ with no electrics. I will need to keep cash replacement value for your share in an envelope with your name on it in case I bend it, since I don't even know if I have a valid Cat 3 or not and insurance will probably try to default.

Otherwise you could buy a Chipmonk and I could polish it like Biff Tannen.

I have seen a few sweet Chipmonks but so far no joy, but I'll PM you if I hit the lotto and let you polish it..

Jesus, that's a hell of a thing. The canopy is ugly as sin though. And why does it have a belly scoop?

A guy I knew had a turbine legend.  Admittedly he was an awesome stick, but
what an airplane!  He was always getting nailed for exceeding the speed limits -
ATC would always rat him out to TC.

I think he wanted a Garrett.  If you want a speedy prop airplane, you could do
a lot worse than a 1100hp Garrett Legend (Vne 400 mph)
