I used to routinely hand-prop the Kinner R-56 and
it was easy - again, if you primed it correctly.  Only
540 cubic inches IIRC.  Low compression.

Biggest radial I ever hand-propped was an R-985.

You could probably hand-bomb an R-1340 without
too much difficulty if you knew how to perfectly
prime it.

Larger than that, time for the rope trick.

One factor people rarely mention re: hand bombing
is the height of the prop and where TDC is in the prop
rotation.  Makes a difference.

Also, how sharp the trailing edges of the prop are.  Ow.

PS  There's a hand-bombing trick I won't mention, with
a weak battery.

People can't even do a straight-up hand bomb safely,
they're not up for a more challenging hybrid technique.

Jesus, no.  If everyone can't do it without any training
or practice, no one should do it.

That's one thing that's always puzzled me about Canadian
Aviation.  Most people consider the Instrument rating
pretty hard.  It requires training and practice.  Logically
flying IFR would be non-PC because it is so elitist.

Therefore, only [b]BAD PEOPLE[/b] fly IFR, correct?

All this political stuff is really hard to understand.

Yup 1340 is pretty easy unless there is a geared prop - I have hand spanked an 1830 on a DC3 more than once. 2 guys - one in front of the prop and one behind - grab and run with a guy in the seat to keep it going once it fires. Too old for that shit now, call maintenance - LMFAOOOooooo but then again depends on where you are and how clean the sheets are and if there is a good supply of Rum  ;D

Regardless of what crazy or normal starter you use ...

What I don't like about today's electric motor starters
is that they allow the pilot to have no clue about priming
correctly. 

Just crank and crank and crank and crank until the
windings melt and the battery is dead.  I cringe
when I see that.

Learn to prime [u]just the right amount[/u] for the conditions.

I shouldn't mention this, but 100LL doesn't evaporate
worth shit in the winter.  Other stuff does, though.
Canadian Tire sells it.

Don't take my word about cold wx, though - I've
given that shit up.  Last time I flew the Rockies I
went via ABQ-DAG in the summer so I wouldn't
even have to [i]see[/i] snow, ever again.

I hand bombed the BN2 O-540 for about 40 hours, the starter packed it in just out of a 50 hour.  I was working a fuel haul in the middle of nowhere Yukon. Finished the haul and went to YXY for mtc and got it fixed. Thing would kick over on the first pull, Fortunately it was on the right side so I could easily hop in and go.

When the left side starter packed it in, I would dive through from the right side door over the drums, good thing that happened near mtc base that wasn't much fun.
