The Champ has lots more room in it than a Cub.

As to using a handheld radio you will need to make an aluminum ground plane under the aetial to get good transmitting range.

Great little airplane.

I read a few discussions with pretty convincing reasons to use a dipole on tube and fabric aircraft. Guys are mounting them inside so they don’t need to poke holes in the skin or use a ground plane. You need to mount it on a piece of wood or plastic to keep it off the metal tubing.

No drag, no place for water to enter the plane. The antenna won’t be bent or broken off when someone cleans the aircraft.

Some Cub guys even said they put one of the AAE units in the vertical stabilizer.

Those was obviously installed when they were doing a recover.

I actually made the trip to go see it yesterday it has an antenna already mounted in the metal fairing over the wing joint, seems to be a common place to mount them on that bird.

The antenna is the most important component of a radio satation
Regardless of what kind of fix/portable transceiver is used, 90% of
the performance depends on the antenna
Investing in a good antenna pays big
There are only 3 kind of people in this world
Those that can add and those that can't
